Listen to Devin DeCiantis discuss the digital native generation, and what they bring to the family enterprise.
All the literature, and all of the mentorship and all the work that we see around fostering creativity and fostering engagement is important, but at the end of the day, forcing the next generation to follow their own dream, whatever that is, inside or outside the business, will be key and when they follow their passions, they have more energy. It’s when you see that twinkle in their eye that you know that they’re on to something and you hope that that is in some way related to the family enterprise, that they are not only creating but sustaining wealth for the collective benefit of their whole family. Certainly financing is an opportunity for them to source capital both within the company, within the family company, and without, but truly I think the degree to which the digital generation, those digital natives, people who have grown up with it, are conversant in all the technologies necessary to look for ideas and to import those into their own family companies or into their own entrepreneurial activities is unprecedented. And I’d like think of myself as relatively young, but there are generations below me that understand this in profoundly different ways than I do and these are the ones, these are the groups that adapt these technologies and these ideas for their family companies.
