How do Establish Boundaries Between Work and Family?
Jason Frohlich suggests using non-business activities to help establish boundaries between work and family.
How do I establish boundaries between work and family? Very difficult. It’s very difficult to establish boundaries. I think it’s trial and error, I had a number of, I guess you can call them arguments, or disagreements, with my father over the years, over strategy and different issues and eventually I realized that bringing it home with me, or taking it too personal, just wouldn’t help and just create some sort of negative vibes, so what I did was, we would try to separate it and try to organize events and trips outside of the business. I also do a lot of sports, which helps a lot, he’s always my biggest fan so, to segue into something else, try and have a balance, and try and find other passions outside of your professional environment and have your father or your family member in your company encourage you and follow you, so to give you a concrete example, I do a lot of triathlons and marathons and my father is my biggest fan. My triathlon club has recognized my father as the biggest fan, so anytime I have an event, he’s there supporting me, wherever it is in Quebec and it helps us have a balanced relationship because he sees that I’m capable of performing outside the company.
